5-Star Hotel in Ripon gets a 5-Star power installation

Utility Engineering Solutions Ltd has been appointed to provide power to Grantley Hall, a luxurious 5-star hotel comprising of 47-bedrooms, exceptional restaurants, a gym and an elite performance centre. The hotel is being established in a Georgian-style estate in Ripon, North Yorkshire.

The Grantley Hall hotel development, a Grade II listed, 5-star hotel, includes a venue facility to cater for up to 200 guests, a signature restaurant, an all-day brasserie, three bars and a private members club.

The hotel development will also include a spa and wellness centre and will provide a stunning wedding venue.

The projected electrical demands for the hotel development necessitated the establishment of a new substation and associated high voltage cable infrastructure, to be supplied from the high voltage distribution network. This outcome followed detailed analyses of the electricity distribution network to determine the most cost-effective way to provide power to the hotel, whilst minimising disruption to the local community and environment and ensuring electricity assets are buried below ground, wherever possible.

Project Details

The electrical arrangements on site include the establishment of an energy centre that includes the main intake substation, Grantley Hall substation and emergency generator supplies.

The UES turnkey solution includes detailed design of the 7.2km cable route from Grantley Hall through to the remote Northern Powergrid primary substation, supply and installation of substation switchgear and ancillary equipment, excavation and installation works for the 11kV circuit, testing and substation pre-commissioning.

The detailed electrical design was completed by UES and submitted to Northern Powergrid for approval. Once approved, meetings with the highways engineers followed to agree the most appropriate methodology and timeline for carrying out the cable trench and cable installation works. Careful consideration was given to the timing of works, traffic control and traffic sensitivities during peak traffic.

Working closely with the local highways engineers, UES commenced the 11kV cable works in October 2017, with de-mobilisation in mid-December to take account of an embargo on carrying out non-essential roadworks in the area.

Excavation works recommenced in early January 2018 in Ripon town centre and the cable installation works up to an including the Northern Powergrid primary were completed at the end of January, with the new 11kV cable installed safely within the primary substation.

Commissioning

The new high voltage cable and switchgear are due to be tested and commissioned, with the 11kV system energised to enable full commissioning of electrical and mechanical plant within the hotel complex.

The hotel is due to open in 2019, ready to accept its first guests who’ll be able to enjoy Yorkshire’s newest luxury hotel experience.
